Regional Newspapers Choose DVD Storage for Digital Asset Management

Regional newspapers at Brighton and Preston have recently installed JVC 8000 series 600 slot DVD jukeboxes. They are both established users of the SCC Digital Asset Management system supplied and supported by Westpoint.

At Preston, the Lancashire Evening Post archived data on CD-R desk top recorders and inserted them into 2 x 150 slot NSM jukeboxes. These had recently reached capacity. The new JVC 600 slot DVD jukebox will now house all the existing archive data with all new data being archived using the latest low cost DVD-R recorders – offering a seven fold increase in capacity.

At Brighton, the Argus, part of the Newsquest Group had been archiving from SCC MediaServer on to RAID but was running out of capacity. DVD technology offered a cost effective to their increasing storage needs.

Westpoint's other customers involved in publishing include Yorkshire Post, Sheffield Star, TNT magazine and Northcliffe Group. Many of these were pioneers of early CD storage needed for their high capacity multimedia files and are now upgrading to DVD technology to take advantage of the increase in storage capacity.
